Plan for new library moves ahead

The Regional District of Central Okanagan will proceed with borrowing up to $8-million on behalf of the Okanagan Regional Library (ORL) to build a new branch in West Kelowna.

The RDCO board has adopted two bylaws to allow for the borrowing from the municipal finance authority.

An alternative approval process saw just three electors submit response forms opposing the borrowing.

At least 16,478 eligible electors had to indicate their opposition in order to require the board to hold a referendum before approving the bylaws.

The ORL has agreed to pay all debt and costs associated with the borrowing which will not have any impact on the RDCO budget.

The new library will be part of a project with a new city hall for West Kelowna at a city-owned site at 3731 Old Okanagan Highway.
