Interior Health records 234 new COVID-19 cases

Interior Health (IH) is still a COVID-19 hot spot in British Columbia after recording 234 new cases on August 5.

The cases in the IH region make up the majority of the 402 identified through the province Thursday.

There are currently 2,066 active COVID-19 cases in B.C., 1,121 of which are in the Interior.

The provincial COVID-19 death toll remains at 1,772 as no new deaths were recorded over the past 24 hours.

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 complications in B.C. now sit at 55 patients, 23 of whom are in intensive care. In the Interior, there are 16 cases in hospital, 10 of whom are in critical care.

There are four COVID outbreaks in the Interior Health region, all at long-term care centres. The affected centres are the Nelson Jubilee Manor, Kootenay Street Village, Cottonwoods Care Centre and Brookhaven Care Centre.

The provincial vaccination rate for British Columbians aged 12 and over increased to 81.7 per cent for first doses, while 68.4 per cent of eligible recipients are fully immunized with two doses.
