The annual Cops for Kids bike ride through southern BC is back for another year. A team of officers and support crew will begin the ride from the Sandman Hotel in Kelowna this morning. The 21st annual event will wrap up back in Kelowna on the 19th after travelling through Osoyoos, Cranbrook, Golden, Kamloops and Vernon. Donations can be made at copsforkids.org .
Beginning Monday eastbound only traffic will be in effect on Raymer Avenue between Richter and Ethel for construction of an active transportation corridor and water utility improvements. It will link downtown to South Pandosy. The project is expected to be done by the end of November.
There were 253 new covid 19 cases in the Interior Health region yesterday, as part of 774 in all of BC. On the vaccine front, 77.8 percent in this province 12 and older are fully vaccinated. There are 61 people in hospital for covid in the region, 42 in critical care.
With the cooler nights and cloudier days, wildfires in the Kamloops Fire Centre are becoming less of a worry. If course the courageous and unrelenting work by firefighters from around the world can’t be recognized enough. As of yesterday, there were 209 fires on the list in BC, with most of them classified as held or under control.
The Regional District Board has agreed to provide some partial water fee relief for customers of three systems impacted by White Rock Lake wildfire evacuations. If approved, at the September 27 meeting, it’s proposed customers would not have to pay the basic user and consumption fees portion of utility bills from August 1 through September 30.
Starting Tuesday, crews will begin phase one of construction on the roundabout at the Shannon Lake-Bartley-Stevens intersection. It includes relocating overhead and underground utilities, and building a retaining wall and portions of the new roundabout. Stevens Road from the Bartley-Shannon Lake intersection to Juliann Road will be closed to vehicle traffic at all times for about 12 weeks.
There are a number of places you can drop in for a vaccine today through Monday. The Westbank Lions Hall from 830-330 each day… Annex ‘C’ (next to the testing site) at 2180 Ethel today from 8:30-3:30…. and the Farmer’s Market on Dilworth tomorrow from 9-noon.
Two men whose canoe flipped were saved thanks to quick action by an off-duty RCMP officer and his 11 year old son. They were on Griffen Lake west of Revelstoke when they heard shouts for help. They weren’t wearing life jackets and were clinging to the canoe. The officer and his son got them into lifejackets and took them to shore, where their families were waiting.
Forty-three Canadians were among around 200 foreigners on board a civilian flight out of Afghanistan yesterday. It was the first large-scale departure since U.S. forces completed their withdrawal over a week ago. They were among 1,250 Canadian citizens, permanent residents and family members stranded in the country.

At the US Open Tennis Championship Canadian Leylah Fernandez has one more game to play. It will be for the women’s title tomorrow at 1pm. The 19 year old beat the world #2 ranked player last night.
Week 6 in the CFL begins today with a rematch of the Labour Day Classic between the Argos and Tiger Cats, except this time in Toronto at 4:30. The BC Lions have had a week off and will host Ottawa tomorrow at 7.
The Formula 1 roadshow has made the trip from the Netherlands to Italy for this weekend’s race. Sprint race qualifying in Monza is tomorrow with the points race on Sunday.
The Vancouver Whitecaps, who have won 4 straight games, are at home tonight. The MLS game against western rival Portland starts at 7 at BC Place.
The Pittsburgh Steelers and star pass-rusher T.J. Watt agreed to a four-year extension worth more than $112 million. The deal reportedly includes $80 million in guaranteed money and makes Watt the highest-paid defender in NFL history.
The Blue Jays have left Yankee Stadium for a weekend at Camden Yards against the Orioles. Last night in the Big Apple,Toronto picked up it’s 4th straight win.
