Masks mandatory for all K-12 students in B.C. effective Monday
B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer has updated safety protocols for schools and are now requiring all students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 to wear masks indoors.
The change mainly effects K-3 students, who weren’t required to wear masks in schools prior to this announcement.
The new regulations, which take effect Monday, Oct. 4, apply to all indoor settings, including when at a desk in class and when on a school bus. This rule was already in place for B.C. students in grades 4 through 12.
“This pandemic continues to evolve and so do we,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry.
“We need to make changes to fit the situation as it’s arising. We know the COVID-19 virus is being transmitted more rapidly, particularly to those who don’t have the protection that vaccinations offers. This extra measure adds another layer of protection as we navigate this phase of the pandemic.”
Also beginning this month, new monthly reports will be released by Henry to inform British Columbians about the virus and it’s effects on school-aged children.
The province notes that regional medical health officers may recommend additional health and safety measures in response to local and regional conditions, and will also work with school districts to put regional regulations in place if needed.
The province notes that the expansion of the mask mandate in school settings builds on a number of other health and safety guidelines developed in partnership with education partners. Those include daily health checks, hand washing, staying home when sick and improved ventilation systems.
Henry also noted that vaccine manufacturers have applied to Health Canada for approval to administer doses to younger children, and while that application is being reviewed she urges eligible British Columbians to get their shots to help reduce the risk of spread and serious illness.
