A home in West Kelowna was damaged by a fire this afternoon (Oct. 17) that also damaged two nearby residences.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue (WKFR) responded to a reported structure fire on Horizon Drive at 3:00 p.m.

Assistant fire chief Brent Watson said heavy black smoke was visible to responding units as soon as they left the station.

“WKFR Engine 32 was first on scene, and found a detached garage fully involved. Intense flames and heat from the burning garage — which was filled with tires, electronics and motorcycles – ignited an adjacent car, torched the sides of two travel trailers and a shed, and melted siding off of two neighboring homes,” said Watson. “The primary residence also suffered damage to siding, yard furniture and ornamental trees.”

Watson said crews were able to control and suppress the fire using multiple hose lines. Additional help was provided by another engine, which had been on a reported wildfire in Upper Glenrosa at the time.

The property owner has insurance, and suffered a minor burn attempting to extinguish the fire.

“The fire is not suspicious and is currently under investigation, although it is likely electrical in nature,” Watson explained

BC Ambulance, the RCMP, Fortis BC and BC Hydro provided support during the incident.
