People who are interested in becoming a member of Central Okanagan Search and Rescue, are invited to attend an open house this week.
It’s part of a recruitment campaign by the volunteer group that continues until Oct. 31.
“The work is unpaid, usually takes place after dark or on weekends, and requires ample availability, willingness and the aptitude to work as part of a team,” said COSAR president Brad Trites.
“In return, you’ll have the opportunity to rescue people and save lives.”
Trites said they are looking for people with outdoor skills, but also with availability.
“We expect a minimum of 200 hours of volunteer time annually and many members give five or six times that,” Trites explained.
Last year COSAR’s 51 members volunteered over 20,000 hours.
An open house this Wednesday will be followed by an evaluation hike, short-listing interviews, and then 90 hours of basic training.
Details and the application can be found at Cosar.ca.
COSAR is the oldest search and rescue organization of its kind in B.C. and is currently the third busiest in the province with 90 tasks in 2021.
