Top Stories – Nov 1 – Racist Glenmore Graffiti
It wasn’t just tagging, it was racist language. That’s what RCMP say happened at a business on Glenmore in Kelowna as someone spray-painted a business and sidewalk with graffiti. Investigation has determined that it happened at about 5:30am Saturday and was done by a man wearing a mask and dark clothing. Police are hoping anyone who was driving by and may have seen something will give them a call.

BC has expanded public health orders to now require all adults supervising or assisting with youth sports and other activities to be fully vaccinated. It means any coach, volunteer or group leader will fall under the new mandate. It also applies to those supervising or leading children’s art, drama and dance programs.
Kelowna RCMP are calling a woman’s death on Friday evening, suspicious. Just after 6pm, they were called to the 1800-block of Vasile Road and when officers arrived, they located a vehicle with the body of a deceased woman inside. Officers spent the weekend looking for witnesses and surveillance video. No arrests have been made and the dead woman’s name has not been released.
West Kelowna Council supported an application to the Province of BC’s FireSmart Community Funding and Supports Program. It’s asking for a grant to hire a coordinator to provide support for property owners seeking to protect their homes from wildfires. If approved, a coordinator would help administer the grant program for up to $500 for eligible mitigation work conducted on homeowner properties.
On Friday, the province reported 584 new cases of covid-19, which included 85 for Interior Health. 85 percent of people 12 and over are now fully vaccinated. It’s 84.2 percent in Canada. We’ll get the weekend numbers for BC this afternoon.
British Columbia’s provincial health officer has extended the mask mandate that requires masks be worn in all indoor public spaces. The previous order, which was set to expire yesterday has no expiry date for the extension. The public places where masks must be worn hasn’t changed either.
For those who have it, curbside yard waste pickup continues until the end of December. But because the clippings are composted, residents are reminded to keep plastic pots, rocks and kitchen scraps out of it. They will take pumpkins, leaves, woodchips and other green items. The BC government is allowing restaurants and pubs to tap into another revenue-generating option. They can package and sell unmixed drinks for takeout or delivery with the purchase of a meal, such as a glass of wine, draft beer, or an unmixed ounce of liquor. Pubs and restaurants can already sell full bottles of wine and spirits as well as mixed drinks for takeout and delivery with meal purchases.
Sports
The Kelowna Rockets suffered their second straight road loss to the Vancouver Giants by a score of 7-2 on Friday. At home on Saturday, the game went to overtime and the Rockets picked up a 5-4 win over Victoria.
The Kelowna Chiefs lost 6-5 in OT to Osoyoos on Friday, while yesterday afternoon in Summerland, they dropped a 7-4 decision.
On the PGA Tour, Aussie Lucas Herbert had two birdies during a windy 4th round and held steady for a 2-under 69 to win the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
The West Kelowna Warriors came from behind and took a 5-4 overtime win against Powell River to remain undefeated at home. The team also announced it acquired Jayden Price from Wenatchee for future considerations.
The Vancouver Canucks are on their second of two days off before the Rangers visit Rogers Arena tomorrow. On Saturday, a goal with 7 seconds left in the game prevented a shut out as they lost 2-1 to the Oilers.
It was a lot closer than the week before, but in the end the BC Lions still lost another game. This time it was 31-29 in overtime in Toronto. BC’s record now 4 & 7 as they play in Hamilton on Friday.
Monday Night Football has the suddenly ‘normal-looking’ Kansas City Chiefs and their 3 & 4 record, hosting the 2 and 5 New York Giants at Arrowhead. Yesterday, the Seahawks found their game while Jacksonville is still looking for its defense as the Seahawks won 31-7.
