Interior records 655 new COVID-19 cases Friday

COVID-19 cases continued to climb with an addition of 655 new COVID-19 cases in the Interior Friday.

The new cases brought the active count in the region up to 6,490.

They were part of 2,364 new COVID-19 cases identified across B.C., bringing the provincial active count to 33,997.

The Ministry of Health said that 924 British Columbians were in hospital due to COVID-19 Friday, 130 of whom were in intensive care.

Nine deaths were also reported throughout the province Friday. To date 2,529 British Columbians have died due to the virus.

The provincial vaccination rate made some gains Friday , as 89.4 per cent of British Columbians aged five and older have received a first dose and 83.5 per cent have had a second jab.

The province noted that 92.5 per cent of British Columbians and 12 and over have received a first dose, while 92.9 per cent of adults in B.C. have had one. The second dose rate was recorded at 89.8 per cent for the 121 and over category and 90.3 per cent for the adult population, while the third dose rates were recorded at 37.8 and 40.5 per cent.

Five new outbreaks were announced Friday, including the Pinegrove Care Centre and Mariposa Gardens in the Interior. A total of 62 health-care facilities in B.C. were considered active outbreak sites, including 11 in the Interior.
