UPDATE: Vernon athlete competes in snowboard cross in Beijing, teammate wins medal

Eliot Grondin, a 20-year-old from Sainte-Marie, Quebec, won a silver medal for Canada in men’s snowboard cross in Beijing, finishing 0.2 seconds behind the winner Alessandro Hammerle of Austria.

Kevin Hill of Vernon was competing in his third Olympic Games and was eliminated prior to the quarterfinal round, finishing in 27th place.

Hill ready for action in Beijing Feb. 9, 2022

Vernon’s Kevin Hill competes for Canada in men’s snowboard cross tonight in Beijing.

This is Hill’s third Olympics.

Hill, 35, placed 14th in the event in the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang, and came in eighth at the 2014 Games in Sochi.

The seeding starts at 7:15 p.m. (all times listed are PST), with the 1/8 final at 10:00 p.m., the quarter final at 10:37 p.m., the semi final at 10:58 p.m. and the finals at 11:15 p.m. .

Tess Critchlow of Big White finished 6th in the women’s snowboard cross Tuesday, with Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George winning a bronze medal.

As of 10:00 a.m., Canada has eight medals: one gold, two silver and five bronze.
