Interior Health has issued a urgent drug alert for all communities as extremely toxic drugs have been identified in the region.
I-H says the street drugs come in all colours from pink and purple to brown and beige and are sold as downers.
Testing of the substances have found extreme levels of fentanyl and benzodiazepenes in the drugs.
The health authority says they can contain up to 55 per cent fentanyl and 25 per cent etizolam.
It’s noted that the benzodiazepene content is a particular concern as it can negate the effectiveness of Naloxone, creating a high risk of fatal overdose.
I-H said people should take steps to prevent overdose by:
- Getting drugs checked
- Not mixing with other drugs, including alcohol
- Using with others around or at an Overdose Prevention Site
- Starting with a small amount and space out doses
- Carrying Naloxone and knowing how to use it
- Using the LifeGuard app
