Police watchdog investigates arrest that injured woman
An incident where a woman was injured while being arrested by police in Salmon Arm, is under investigation by B.C.’s police watchdog.
RCMP were called to a residence in the 200-block of 27 Avenue in Salmon Arm on the evening of Sunday, Feb. 13 for a report that an intoxicated woman had assaulted others at the residence, and was causing a disturbance by yelling and swearing.
“The woman had been asked to leave but she allegedly refused and was arrested. Prior to being taken into custody, the woman allegedly assaulted a police officer and resisted attempts to place her in handcuffs. During the interaction with police she was injured,” said S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet, senior media relations officer with the BC RCMP .
Police say the woman was taken to hospital where she was treated and released.
“The Salmon Arm RCMP is continuing to investigate the allegations of assaulting a police officer and assault, while the IIO BC is investigating the actions of the police in this case as it relates to the woman’s injury,” said Shoihet.
The investigation by the Independent Investigations Office of BC will determine if police should face charges as a result of their actions
