COVID-19 case numbers continue to improve, but death toll rises

While the numbers have been on the decline, Interior Health continues to lead the province in new COVID-19 cases.

The health authority reported 183 new infections on Friday, down by 11 from Thursday. Fraser Health had the next highest total with 138.

For all of B.C., there were 583 new cases, a slight decrease from the 597 on Thursday.

There are 599 people hospitalized with COVID-19 (decrease of 13) and 96 are in intensive care (decrease of 6).

Since Thursday, 12 more people have died of the virus for an overall total of 2,851. (Note: One reported death has been removed from the total due to a data correction.)

The new deaths include ten in Fraser Health, and one each in Northern and Island Health.

There has been one new health-care facility outbreak at Cascade Gardens Seniors Community (Fraser Health).

The outbreaks at Sunridge Place, Sluggett House and The Heights at Mt. View (Island Health) have been declared over, for a total of 27 facilities with ongoing outbreaks including ten in Interior Health.

As of Friday, 90.6 per cent of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 86.1 per cent have had two doses and 55.3 per cent of those 12 and older have had three shots.

From Feb. 17-23, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 20.7 per cent of cases and from Feb. 10-23 they accounted for 33.7 per cent of hospitalizations.
