UPDATE: Attack on UBCO security guard now a homicide

A security guard who was assaulted at the University of B.C. Okanagan (UBCO) campus in Kelowna over the weekend, has died of her injuries.

RCMP say the assault case is now being investigated as a homicide.

The victim, a 24-year old woman, was injured while working on the campus Saturday morning, Feb. 26.

“Shortly after the incident occurred, the suspect was identified and he was apprehended under the Mental Health Act. He remains in hospital and is possibly facing murder charges,” said Cpl. Tammy Lobb, media relations officer.

Lobb said the RCMP continues to work with UBCO regarding the incident as the investigation continues.

RCMP investigates assault at UBCO

Police were at the University of B.C. Okanagan (UBCO) campus early this morning to investigate an assault.

“At approximately 5:55 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, the Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of an assault that had occurred in one of the buildings on campus,” said media relations officer Cpl. Tammy Lobb. “Upon initial investigation, it has been determined a man working at the university assaulted a security guard.”

The man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and the victim was taken to Kelowna General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Lobb said there is no risk to public safety as police conduct their investigation, working with UBCO.
