COVID update: Cases and hospitalizations down

New COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations were both down slightly in British Columbia on Wednesday.

The health ministry reported 442 new infections around the province (decrease of 24 from Tuesday) with 105 in Interior Health (down by 88). Fraser Health had the most new cases with 111.

There are 517 people in hospital with COVID-19 (decrease of 6) and 73 are in intensive care (down by 10).

Since Tuesday, ten more people have died of COVID-related issues, for an overall total of 2,883.

The latest fatal cases include two in the Interior, four in Vancouver Coastal, and two each in Fraser and Northern Health.

There have been five new health-care facility outbreaks at Mission Memorial Hospital (Fraser Health), Gillis House (Interior Health), Berwick House Gordon Head, The Heights at Mt. View and Greenwoods (Island Health).

The outbreaks at Burnaby Hospital, Langley Memorial Hospital, Good Samaritan Delta View Care Centre (Fraser Health), Glenmore Lodge, Castleview Care Centre (Interior Health), Eden Gardens, Kiwanis Village Lodge, Glacier View Lodge, Sidney All Care, Wexford Creek and Salvation Army Sunset Lodge (Island Health) have been declared over, for a total of 21 facilities with ongoing outbreaks, 10 in Interior Health.

As of Wednesday, 90.6 per cent of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID vaccine, 86.3 per cent have had two shots and 55.8 per cent of 12 and older have received three doses.

From Feb. 22-28, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 19.7 per cent of cases. From Feb. 15-28, they accounted for 34.6 per cent of hospitalizations.
