Okanagan College is hosting a virtual Conversation About Ukraine event on Tuesday, March 8, to educate people about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“The intention is to help our students, colleagues and community better understand the history of this conflict, and consider the impact of disinformation,” said Pamela Nelson, Okanagan College Business Professor, who has been organizing the panel.

“It’s important to create a safe space which fosters truth and understanding; a space where our community can come together and have a discussion as we try to navigate and process this very difficult and traumatic time.”

The panel will feature speakers with educational and political backgrounds who can offer a variety of perspectives on the matter, including three people with ties to Okanagan College.

Dean of Business William Gillet will be able to provide information based on his background in diplomatic relations and international support systems.

Political science professor Linda Elmose will share her experience in global politics, global political economy and politics of human rights, while history professor Howard Hisdall will offer insights based on his 25 years of military service.

The panel will also feature Peter Bihun, President of the Ukrainian Cultural Society, who will represent the Ukrainian community, and Stephen Fuhr, the former Kelowna-Lake Country MP, Canadian Forces veteran and former NATO Combat Air Operations Evaluator, who has insights into the impacts of economic sanctions.

The discussion will be moderated by OC Business Professor Devin Rubadeau.

The Conversation About Ukraine will be held on Zoom Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. Registration is required in order to participate in the event.
