A door-to-door scammer reportedly attempted to defraud a Kelowna resident by collecting cash donations for a fictitious cause.

The Kelowna RCMP say at around 4 p.m. Monday, April 11, they received a report of a suspect knocking on doors in the 600-block area of Denali Drive, supposedly collecting money on behalf of a cancer foundation.

The suspect, who identified himself as “Elia,” is described as a 25 year old man with an Eastern European accent.

During the time of the incident he was wearing a blue and yellow jacket and jeans.

“The suspect was described as being pushy and was only accepting cash donations,” said Cpl. Tammy Lobb, Media Relations Officer for the Kelowna RCMP.

“Before handing over your hard-earned cash, take the time to do your homework and look into whether or not the person and organization they claim to be representing, is legitimate.”

The RCMP say the resident did not give the suspect any money, as they were suspicious of the claims being made, and followed up by calling a reputable cancer foundation who confirmed they do not do any in-person fundraising.

Kelowna RCMP remind residents to report any suspicious persons or activities by calling the detachment at 250-762-3300 or by filing an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers either online or by calling 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Frauds and scams can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
