West Kelowna Fire Rescue (WKFR) responded to a small interface fire in the Petterson Road area of the city this afternoon.

On arrival, crews found a wind-driven rank 2 fire burning uphill into Crown land, away from nearby structures.

“Crews were able to maneuver a 2,500 gallon Pumper/tender into place along an adjacent dirt road and provide large volumes of water to quickly extinguish the fire,” said assistant fire chief Brent Watson. “Crews then dug a hand-guard around the 50 foot by 30 foot fire perimeter.”

Mop-up operations will continue into the evening.

Watson said there were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The department is thanking the BC Wildfire Service for standing by with an initial attack crew out of Penticton to support the fire fight.

“Conditions are unseasonably dry for this time of the year. WKFR reminds residents to exercise extreme caution in the forests and along the wildland urban interface, even at this early stage of the fire season,” Watson advised.
