UPDATE June 2, 2022

The Vernon Lions Club treasurer has completed work on the proceeds of last Saturday’s fundraising tournament for Camp Easter Seal Winfield.

Organizer Michele Materi-Baker tells Vernon Matters that the final tally slightly exceeds $17,000.

The funds were from golfer registration, mulligan sales, a putting competition, sponsor promotions, silent and live auctions.

The funds will be used to offset the cost of differently-abled youth attending camp Winfield.

The average cost of care is about $3,500 per week per camper.

Original: A two-year break due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions had golfers in the Vernon Lions Club Charity Golf Classic itching to hit the links.

The event was in support of the Easter Seal Camp on Davidson Road in Winfield.

Held at the Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club on Saturday, May 28, 109 golfers teed off with a one o’clock shotgun, best-ball format. Each player used three drives in 18 holes and then the team all hit the remaining shots from the same spot.

Sunny weather and good course conditions, along with fun activities at many of the sponsored holes, resulted in a cheery crowd.

The sale of mulligans (a free stroke) and a putting competition raised over $1,000, while proceeds from silent live auctions were still being tabulated. The top live auction item was a four night houseboat adventure from Twin Anchors Houseboats in Sicamous. Vernon Matters will update the amount, when it becomes available.

The top team came in at 12-under par, and while there was some competition, everyone agreed the winners will be differently-abled youth who will get to attend summer camp. There is also some consideration of having a camp for adults to attend.

Spear-headed by board member Rob Ellis of Vernon, the camp underwent a $500,000 upgrade in 2014 with the help of 300 volunteers.

Easter Seal Camps are celebrating 75 years of service in 2022 and looking to connect with alumni.
