Top Stories – July 4 – Fatal UTV Crash
Lake Country RCMP received a report of a UTV roll-over on Spion Kop Mountain in the area of Summit Trail early Saturday. The passenger, a 34-year-old man, was dead at the scene and another 34 year old, the driver, was arrested for impaired operation causing death. The BC Coroners Service is conducting its own, parallel investigation. No names have been released.
Construction begins today on the Abbott Street Active Transportation Corridor extension between Rose and Cedar avenues. It will include 1200 metres of cycle track added to the existing asphalt with concrete barriers and planter boxes as a physical buffer between vehicles and cyclists. The work is expected to be complete in September.
In case you missed it, the federal government has extended remaining pandemic border measures for travellers entering Canada. That includes the use of the ArriveCAN app as well as testing and mandatory quarantining for unvaccinated travellers. They will remain in place until at least Sept. 30. Masks are still required in airports and on aircraft.

Saanich police say the 2 men killed in a shootout with police during a bank robbery last week where twin brothers from Duncan. Three officers from Saanich and three from Victoria were injured. Police also had to dispose if explosive devices in a car associated with the 22 year olds who had no criminal records.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning shoppers about a big recall in several provinces. The affected product, T.A.S. brand Coconut Water, is being recalled because it contains milk which is not declared on the label. In BC it was sold at Superstore, Independent Grocers, No Frills and other Loblaw retailers.
This is the last day to pay your property taxes. And payment has to be received by the end of business or a 10% penalty is immediately tacked on. Homeowner grants must be claimed online, except on WFN, where it can be done at the government office.
Beginning today until Wednesday, Chute Lake Rd. between South Crest Dr. and Lark St. will be closed from 7pm to 6am for road resurfacing. Alternate routes will be marked. Motorists can expect delays and should give themselves extra time. Only residents who live on the streets accessed solely from Chute Lake Rd. will be permitted access.
A large chunk of a glacier broke loose Sunday afternoon and roared down a mountainside in Italy, sending ice, snow and rock into hikers on a popular trail. Authorities say at least six people were killed and eight were injured. Rescuers were checking license plates in the parking lot to determine how many people might be unaccounted for.

The Vancouver Canucks have signed restricted free agent Brock Boeser to a new deal. The 25-year-old right-winger has a three-year contract worth 6.65 million per year. The Canucks picked him 23rd overall in the 2015 NHL entry draft.
The Canucks hired Mike Yeo as an assistant coach and promoted Trent Cull to the same position for the upcoming NHL season. Yeo was assistant coach with the Flyers in 2020-21 and for the first 22 games last season before being named interim head coach after Alain Vigneault was fired.
The Toronto Blue Jays lost 7-3 to Tampa yesterday so they went 1 & 2 in the three games they played at Rogers Centre. The Jays spend this week on the west coast.
Formula 1’s British Grand Prix, needed a restart after a first lap crash saw one of the cars flip, slide upside down and end up on its side behind the tire barriers… the driver was okay. At the end, Carlos Sainz was first to take the checkered flag and his first win, followed by Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton.
One game in the CFL tonight to wrap up an extended Canada Day weekend as the Bombers take on the Argos in Toronto. The BC Lions are 3 & 0 after winning their last game in Ottawa.
A Russian ice hockey star who signed with the Philadelphia Flyers was rounded up by Russian plain-clothes policemen and taken to an army enlistment office to be sent to fight in Ukraine. 25 year old Ivan Fedotov was reportedly rushed into Putin’s army after he was filmed being detained by a squad of officers outside an ice rink in St Petersburg.
