Gary Sumner has some stories to tell — and the pictures to go with those.

Sumner is a North Okanagan resident who was a freelance photographer In the late 70’s while in his 20’s. He travelled and toured with more than 100 classic rock bands. He spent three years, 1978 through 1981, taking pictures around North America, capturing images of some of the biggest names in the business such as The Rolling Stones, Elton John, The Who and Kiss.

Fast forward to today, and Sumner is ready to display 100 of his biggest prints at the Grand House of Photography in Vernon where he is the curator. The photos will be shown for the month of July, and are also for sale, with more details at www.thegrandhouseofphotography.com

“Gary has stories to share with you on shooting pictures on stage, like, Pete Townsend behind his amps and what was absolutely not allowed to be photographed during songs. [Also] the groupies Gary had to acquire down in front of the stage for the roadies,” a news release from the gallery stated.

Sumner will host a grand opening exhibit night where attendees can hear some “back stage pass stories,” on Thursday, July 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the gallery at 3105-28th Avenue.

“There will be some good rockin’ live music, and in the portrait studio, photographers are encouraged to bring their cameras and shoot [a] live model musician,” said Sumner.
