A recreational vehicle and truck were destroyed in an overnight fire at the Evely forestry campsite on the west side of Okanagan Lake.

“It came in as a report of a brush fire. I believe somebody called from the other side of the lake — from the Vernon, Lake Country side,” deputy fire chief Shawn Barnes told Vernon Matters.

Barnes said when firefighters arrived at the site north of Fintry Provincial Park around 1:30 a.m., they had a fully-engulfed motor home and truck.

“The fire was starting to climb up the hill going up towards the road. It started to go up into the trees but they knocked it down. They took care of the exposures. The fire was fully engulfed. There was nothing to save. The motor home is 100 per cent gone, the truck is gone.”

Barnes said two occupants of the RV were taken to Vernon hospital with minor burn injuries.

He says the cause is unknown.

The deputy chief added the recent wet weather helped to keep the blaze from spreading and turning into a wildfire.

“Well, put it this way: had it been been 2021, we would have had an evacuation probably, because it was so dry in 2021,” Barnes told Vernon Matters.
