Drivers urged to be cautious over the long weekend

The Insurance Corporation of B.C. (ICBC) is reminding people to be safe when behind the wheel over the long weekend.

The Crown corporation said, on average, three people are killed and 560 are injured in 1,980 crashes over the B.C. Day long weekend every year.

The Southern Interior sees an average of one person killed and 85 injured in 350 crashes over the same period.

ICBC advised travellers to look out for motorcycles; be patient with R.V. drivers and those towing trailers or boats; do a pre-trip check to ensure the vehicle is in good enough condition for long trips; ensure pets are secured in the vehicle; and to not drink and drive.

It was also noted that most of the collisions over the B.C Day long weekend occur on the Friday, and people are advised to plan their departure time for Thursday or Saturday, if possible.

A recent ICBC survey found that 66 per cent of respondents stated that they would be or have already taken a road trip this summer, while 45 per cent said they will be driving more than they did last summer.

More traffic on the roads over the summer brings the possibility of heavy congestion and delays, and ICBC advises people not rush to make up time and instead plan to leave early to allow for extra travel time.
