UPDATE: Vehicle fire spreads to grass, traffic impacted

UPDATE: 4:40 p.m.

Traffic was stalled on the highway south of Vernon this morning due to a vehicle fire that spread.

RCMP say a car caught fire near Highway 97 and Kalamalka Lakeview Drive around 10:30 a.m. today (Sept. 13). (See video below)

“The vehicle fire spread to a nearby grass area which was extinguished by the fire department. There were no injuries as a result of the fire which is believed to have been mechanically caused,” Cpl. Neil Body, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP told Vernon Matters.

Body added the southbound lanes of Highway 97 were closed for a short period of time while crews attended to the fire.

Traffic stalled on highway

It’s been slow going for vehicles travelling between Vernon and Lake Country this morning.

The southbound lanes have been stalled just past the turn off to the Greater Vernon landfill at Bernie Road.
