Okanagan College will host several events to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation over the next week. The college will hold the 13th annual Youth Exhibition Powwow in Kelowna today from 9:30-4, and a webinar and film screening and discussion next Tuesday. There will be a ceremony at the Kelowna campus next Thursday, and flags will be lowered on all O-C- campuses and stay down for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on the 30th.
West Kelowna Council is supporting the Regional District applying for, receiving, and managing a UBCM Community Emergency Preparedness Fund grant. It will be used to complete the Extreme Heat Risk Mapping, Assessment and Planning project on behalf of the City, as part of a regional partnership program administered by RDCO.
Environment Canada says Hurricane Fiona is expected to hit Nova Scotia late tonight and tomorrow morning as a tropical storm. It is forecast to make landfall over eastern mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island and will reach the lower Quebec north shore and southeastern Labrador early Sunday. Fiona is expected to bring widespread rainfall, between 100 to 200 millimetres… that’s 4 to 9 inches.
Development permit and several variances were approved by Kelowna Council for a six-storey project at the corner of Drysdale Boulevard and Glen Park Drive in Glenmore. The proposal includes 30, one-bedroom units, and seven, two-bedroom units.
On October 15th, Peachland residents can vote in a referendum on whether to support the borrowing of up to $17-1/2 Million to relocate and construct a new Protective Services Building. People can drop in for brunch and an open house tomorrow from 10 to 2 at the Peachland Fire Hall on 3rd St. The Chief and District Staff will be there to answer questions about the project and the referendum process.
A Canadian Forces officer who urged other military members against helping to distribute COVID vaccines has pleaded guilty to conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline. The Officer Cadet pleaded NOT guilty to behaving in a scandalous manner unbecoming an officer. Prosecutors have withdrawn a third charge of endeavouring to persuade another person to join in a mutiny, for which the 60-year-old could have faced up to life in prison.
A Kelowna man was in disbelief and denial for a full day after finding out he had a lottery ticket worth half a Million dollars. Lorne Hradecki verified the win at the self-checker at Your Independent Grocer on Gordon, where he had bought the ticket. He plans to purchase a new car with the winnings and may plan a vacation or two.
Penticton RCMP were called to a report of a man passed out inside a running vehicle. They found numerous illegal drugs inside and the 34 year old man was arrested for suspected drug-impaired driving. A further search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of multiple weapons, a significant quantity of suspected drugs, morphine pills, LSD, illegal cigarettes, and a large amount of money.
Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie says BC ranks last among the provinces and territories in providing key financial support for seniors. That includes things like home support, eye exams, hearing aids and monthly supplements. The report makes 10 recommendations, including indexing the seniors’ supplement to inflation and provide annual bus passes and transportation services for those with accessibility issues.

The new WHL season for the Kelowna Rockets begins tomorrow night. Face off against Portland Winterhawks is at 7:05 at Prospera Place. The West Kelowna Warriors begin their BC Hockey League season on Vancouver Island. They take on Cowichan Valley tonight and move down to Victoria tomorrow.
It’s a short training camp at Whistler today and tomorrow for the Vancouver Canucks. There are two exhibition games on Sunday. Half the squad will go to Calgary, while the other halves will meet at Rogers Arena at 4.
NHL teams playing in the Czechia capital next month have been told their Russian players are not welcome. Nashville and San José are to play regular season games on Oct. 7 and 8 and each have 1 available Russian player on their team.
The Okanagan Sun are teaming up with Kelowna and West Kelowna fire departments for tomorrow’s game against Langley at the Apple Bowl at 4. A portion of all ticket sales will go to the Burn Fund and will be matched by The Stober Group. The Sun are undefeated this season.
It’s the rematch tomorrow between the BC Lions and Calgary Stampeders and BC will clinch a spot in post season play with a win. Kick off at BC Place stadium is at 7.
