Police were not buying a story given to them by a driver after a single vehicle crash in Kelowna.

Officers were called to East Kelowna Road on Sept. 23 just after 1:30 a.m.

Mounties say a westbound vehicle drifted right on a fairly straight portion of the roadway and clipped a telephone pole.

As police arrived, the occupants were reported to be yelling and arguing, with some walking off. All appeared intoxicated, but uninjured.

“The 2005 Ford Focus sustained significant damage to the passenger side and airbags were deployed,” said police spokesperson Const. Mike Della Paolera. “The registered owner was attempting to say an unknown male had been driving her car and caused the collision.”

Della-Paolera said officers were able to determine the female was being deceitful. They say she was showing signs of intoxication by alcohol and was in fact driving.

Following a breath sample, the woman received a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

“The driver and passengers were 19 and 20 years old,” said the constable. “It is very fortunate no one was injured in this incident and is an example of the hazards driving while intoxicated.”
