RCMP seeing more dangerous campfires at homeless encampments
The use of camp stoves and open flames to keep homeless residents warm in Kelowna is a growing concern for police and fire officials.
RCMP and the Kelowna Fire Department attended a fire along the Rail Trail near Wendell Place at Crowley Avenue this morning.
“The fire had fully engulfed a tent with an occupant inside,” said Constable Mike Della-Paolera. “A fast response by the RCMP with the fire department extinguished the fire and were able to remove the occupant before they sustained any injuries.”
Della-Paolera said the quick response more than likely saved others who were also sleeping at the time, and avoided a potentially catastrophic situation.
“As the temperatures lower, we are seeing more individuals experiencing homelessness using dangerous camp stoves and open flames in an attempt to keep warm,” said Scott Powrie, Sergeant in Charge of the Community Safety Unit. “This of course makes us extremely concerned for the well-being of the people in these encampments.”
RCMP and City Bylaws will be working with the campers to find other ways to keep warm.
“Either finding placement in shelters for the winter months or providing warm sleeping bags will be discussed with them in the coming weeks,” Powrie stated.
