Smithers RCMP
Four police vehicles and an ambulance were among 8 vehicles that burned in what authorities say was a targeted attack in a Smithers hotel parking lot yesterday. RCMP are interested in dash cam video from anyone traveling between Houston and Smithers and New Hazelton and Smithers between 1 and 6am. Fortunately no one was injured and firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to the hotel.
Drivers are reminded to be careful and keep their eyes on a swivel on Halloween. Data from ICBC shows there were 620 crashes resulting in 240 injuries across the province last October 31. On average, there are 110 crashes and 29 injuries recorded in the Southern Interior each Halloween.
Two men accused of stuffing five walleye with lead weights during a lucrative fishing tournament on Lake Erie pleaded not guilty to cheating and other charges in Cleveland. Tournament officials became suspicious when the fish they turned in were significantly heavier than walleye of that length typically are. The fish were cut open and the weights fell out. They face charges of cheating, attempted grand theft and possessing criminal tools.
With Remembrance Day approaching, the Rotary Club of Kelowna’s Field of Crosses is returning to the Cenotaph in City Park. The Memorial will be erected next Wednesday, when there will be an opening ceremony, and stay until November 12. The ceremony will be at 11 and is open to everyone to see local names on the crosses.
Immigrants made up nearly a quarter of all people in Canada in 2021 and are projected to represent one third by 2041. Census Canada says one in five people coming to Canada were born in India, making it the top country of birth for recent arrivals. Canada offers a level of stability and a relatively short path to permanent residency and citizenship compared to many other countries, making it an attractive destination for newcomers.
A Quebec woman who allegedly travelled to Syria to join the Islamic State terrorist group has been repatriated from Syria and will face charges. They include: leaving Canada to participate in the activity of a terrorist group, participation in the activity of a terrorist group and conspiracy to participate in the activity of a terrorist group. She was arrested early yesterday at Montreal’s Trudeau Airport.
Kelowna and Vernon RCMP are both searching for a missing man. Dillon Angle of Kelowna was reported missing Oct. 19, after his vehicle was discovered abandoned in Vernon. Angle is known to live a high-risk lifestyle which includes addiction issues. You’ll find more details and a picture on the News tab on our website.
The Competition Bureau says WestJet’s proposed acquisition of Sunwing is likely to result in less competition in the sale of vacation packages to Canadians. The regulator’s concerns were outlined in a report delivered to the Minister of Transport. The final decision on the deal will be made by cabinet, based on a recommendation from the minister.
France has denied an extradition request for a priest accused of crimes against children in Nunavut. Johannes Rivoire is in his 90s and lives in Lyon and was in Canada from the early 1960s to 1993. He is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant, issued in February, for a charge of sexual assault stemming from a complaint received last year and would be arrested if he returns.
