Jason Podollan has been hired by the Salmon Arm Silverbacks to help players with the mental side of their game.

The Vernon native — and former NHL forward — will be the BC Hockey League team’s mental performance coach, which ties into his business called Up My Hockey.

“The Salmon Arm Silverbacks are a progressive example of the new wholistic approach to player development,” Podollan, a second round draft pick by the Florida Panthers in 1994, said.

“Taking initiative to secure dedicated support for the personal development and mental fitness of the Silverback players is something I applaud. It sends a message to the team, the community and the rest of the league, that we care about who plays for us – both as high performing athletes and as people.”

Silverbacks general manager Brooks Christensen said the team is looking forward to seeing what Jason can do with the new position.

“We are very fortunate to have Jason joining our organization and the wealth of knowledge he brings to our players. We are dedicated to helping our players develop not only on the ice but off the ice and having Jason as a resource is beneficial to our kids,” Christensen said.

Podollan, 46, played in 41 NHL games from 1996 to 2002 with the Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings and the New York Islanders. He also suited up for Team Canada at the 1996 U-20 World Junior Championship.

Podollan has been providing colour commentary for Vernon Vipers home games on Beach Radio this season.
