B.C. Liberal Party members support name change
British Columbia Liberal Party members have voted to change the party’s name to BC United.
Leader Kevin Falcon says 80 per cent of the voters who cast a ballot were in favour of the name change, and he’s thrilled with the result.
Only 18 per cent of party members voted on the proposal.
The change first needs to be approved by members at convention, which Falcon says will likely be early next year.
It’s also up to them to decide when the change will be made, something Falcon says they want to be smart about.
He says if the NDP government and incoming premier, David Eby, call a snap election, he won’t change the name immediately.
Meantime, the NDP is taking aim at the Liberal’s decision to change its name to BC United.
A statement from the New Democrats said the new name is “an attempt to hide Kevin Falcon’s record of working for the wealthiest while making life harder for everyone else.”
The NDP said Falcon’s 12 year record in government shows he gave tax breaks to B.C.’s richest one per cent, made deep cuts to health care and raided millions from the Insurance Corporation of BC, while boosting premiums for drivers.
