The Okanagan is facing some heat through the weekend and Interior Health is urging people be safe. Heat-related illness can affect anyone, but poses higher risks to kids, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with pre-existing and chronic illnesses. Stay cool and hydrated, and if air conditioning isn’t available, head for cool indoor locations like a mall, and of course, never leave pets… or people, inside parked vehicles.

Don’t forget the Downtown Kelowna Association’s Block Party tomorrow. Four blocks of Bernard Avenue from Kerry Park to St. Paul Street will be filled with family-friendly activities, art, food, shopping and entertainment from 10-4. More details at downtownkelowna.com .

Big White Ski Resort will be making a charitable donation of $22,000 to JoeAnna’s House. It comes from proceeds from the Telus Kelowna Cup which was held in February. Since its inaugural event in 2015, the event has helped raise $190,000 to support JoeAnna’s House and its assistance for families facing medical challenges.

Kelowna RCMP say they have located the van that was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Enterprise on Sunday. The white Ford van is said to have hit a cyclist, the driver got out briefly then took off. The cyclist was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

KF Aerospace is opening its hangar doors for a Career Fair and Open House next Thursday. It will give an inside look at a variety of career opportunities with KF’s aviation services. The event at YLW will showcase positions in the skilled trades, as well as administration, supply chain, logistics and aerospace engineering.

The Federal Environment Minister says everything possible is being done to prevent additional deaths and tragedy from wildfires. A nine-year-old boy from 100 Mile House died last week after an asthma attack that is believed to have been exacerbated by wildfire smoke, while two firefighters died in the line of duty. And in Alberta, a pilot died after his West Kelowna-based helicopter crashed while fighting a fire.

There has been no comment from West Kelowna’s Valhalla Helicopters after one of their aircraft crashed while fighting wildfires in Alberta. The Alberta pilot was the only one on board, and was killed. The province’ s Forestry Minister says it happened in a remote area northeast of Peace River.

A number of stolen recreational and utility vehicles worth about $75,000 were recovered when RCMP raided a property at the end of Appaloosa Road in Kelowna. RCMP also found weapons and drugs. A 30-year-old man has been released from custody on conditions and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

A man in England who stole almost 200,000 Cadbury Creme Eggs has been jailed for 18 months. He used a metal grinder to break into an industrial building. He then drove off in a stolen truck with a trailer full of chocolate products worth more than $52,000. He also had time added for driving without insurance.

Sports

In the CFL last night the Elks took their 7th loss in 7 games, this time 28-14 in Winnipeg. Toronto takes on Hamilton tonight while the Roughriders are at BC Place tomorrow at 4.

The Kelowna Falcons are back home at Elks Stadium tonight. Port Angeles is in town for a weekend series. First pitch just after 6:30

The annual Orange versus Brown Okanagan Sun football game is on tomorrow at 1 at the Apple Bowl. It’s free to get in to watch the Canadian junior football champions.

The Toronto Blue Jays begin a west coast swing with a weekend series against the Mariners. Yesterday at Rogers Centre they shut out the Padres 4-0.

Heading into the second round of The Open Championship in Liverpool today, three players were tied for the lead at 5 under par. Top Canadian was Corey Connors at plus-two.
