A section of Mission Creek Regional Park in Kelowna remains closed on the south side of Mission Creek going east on the Soopolallie Trail due to a fire.

Park visitors are asked to watch for barricades and stay out of the area until further notice so that fire crews can safely work.

The fire in Mission Creek Regional Park was reported at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16 and is now under control.

The Kelowna Fire Department and BC Wildfire Service responded to the fire and crews continue to monitor fire activity.

The Kelowna Fire department says the fire was initially 100ft X 200ft and located on the south slopes of Mission Creek, above Creekside Road and below Dunster Road in the East Kelowna neighborhood.

“The fire quickly ran up the steep grade with the occasional tree candling,” captain Micah Volk said. “Crews were deployed along the east and west flanks, as well as the south end of the fire by Dunster Road to bring it under control. BC Wildfire Service assisted with a helicopter to drop water along the flanks of the fire.”

Volk said there were no injuries to firefighters or the public and no loss of property.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
