Theme for International Women’s Day: ‘Inspire Inclusion’
Today is International Women’s Day which is celebrated annually on March 8.
The global event celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.
International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since the early 1900’s, and was marked for a first time by the United Nations in 1975.
The United Nations theme for this year is ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’ which is aimed at tackling economic disempowerment.
The campaign theme for is ‘Inspire Inclusion.’ When we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion, we forge a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. (internationalwomensday.com)
The Vernon branch of the Okanagan Regional Library will hold an event to honour women on Sunday, March 10 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Elders Akira Hanson and Margaret Clark will lead an afternoon of sharing and creation. people who have a woman to honour are asked to bring a photo and a story to share.
The event is open to anyone who identifies as female.
The committee that is organizing the Esso Cup U18 Women’s Hockey Championship is hosting a Women’s Day Gala in the Civic Room at Kal Tire Place on March 8 from 7 to 9 p,m.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Kimberley Amirault-Ryan, an internationally recognized speaker and sport performance consultant.
Following her presentation, Dr. Amirault-Ryan will take part in a hot stove panel, featuring local residents Mandi Duhamel (Senior Director, NHL), Torrie Silverthorn (Tourism Vernon), Nicky Dunlop (BC Winter Games president – Vernon HOC), and Viola Brown (OKIB).
