Police say two people died while taking part in an event at a race track in the South Okanagan.

On Wednesday, June 5, at 5:30 p.m., officers responded to a single vehicle crash at the Area 27 Motorsports Park in Oliver.

RCMP say the investigation determined the driver of a sports car participating in a private event failed to navigate a turn in the course, resulting in it hitting a cement barrier at a high-rate of speed.

“Tragically, both the driver and passenger succumbed to injuries they sustained,” Cpl. James Grandy, BC RCMP spokesperson, said. “Criminality is not believed to be factor, and the matter is now being investigated by the BC Coroner Service.”

Grandy said Area 27 is a private motorsports club.
