Heat wave: Vernon sets new record, temperatures still rising
Temperature records were set in 22 B.C. communities on Sunday including in Vernon and two other Okanagan cities.
Environment Canada said the mercury in Vernon got up to 36.1 Celsius on July 7, breaking the old mark of 34.5 set in 2015.
Kelowna reached 36.5, surpassing the previous record if 35.6 set in 1970.
Penticton also reached 36.5, breaking the record of 36.1 set in 1960.
A heat warning remains in effect with Environment Canada saying the hot conditions are expected to continue through Wednesday with Vernon expected to hit 37 Monday, 39 on Tuesday and 38 on Wednesday.
“These temperatures are expected to moderate starting Thursday but will remain elevated through the remainder of the week,” the weather agency stated.
Heat warnings are also in place for seven other provinces and the Northwest Territories.
