Local CCTV footage helps track down suspected arsonist

Another example of CCTV surveillance footage helping track down the bad guys in Kelowna.

RCMP said they’ve arrested a 40 year old man in connection to the early morning arsons last month on Springfield and Dayton which damaged two businesses.

Police said there was extensive utilization of CCTV footage throughout the neighborhood which enabled investigators to link key pieces of evidence and, ultimately helped ID the suspect.

The fires happened within 30 minutes of each other at around 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Feb,16. Police made the arrest Thursday, March 6.

In a media release Sgt. Scott Powrie, with Kelowna RCMP said the incident was met with an excellent response by frontline members, who took immediate investigational steps that allowed the Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) to advance the case..

“A great deal of work went into this investigation, with extensive utilization of CCTV footage throughout the neighborhood, enabling investigators to link key pieces of evidence, ” he said. ” We would like to thank the neighbouring businesses who shared their surveillance video as it was instrumental in the identification of the suspect.”
