Planning for vulnerable Lake Country agricultural water supply

The District of Lake Country is set to begin work on Phase 3 of the Beaver Lake Chain and Vernon Creek Water Management Plan.

The plan attempts to deal with the juggling act required to keep various water bodies healthy, especially during the summer.

The planning – which aims to address the specific challenge of using Beaver Lake to refill Duck Lake in summer – is aimed at ensuring a reliable water supply in future while also protecting aquatic life.

However, the exchange of water between the lakes, while reestablishing environmental flows in Middle Vernon Creek, means the District of Lake Country’s Beaver Lake supply becomes more vulnerable to multi-year droughts.

A statement from the District Of Lake Country said the project is made possible through the financial support of the Province of British Columbia via the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

“Our top priority is to maintain sustainable water flows for the aquatic habitat in Middle Vernon Creek while also safeguarding the community’s water needs,” Lake Country Blair Mayor Ireland said.

β€œIt’s crucial that we support the creation and restoration of healthy ecosystems for future generations. This funding reflects the Province and the District’s shared commitment to protecting the environment and securing a reliable water supply for the future.”
