The BC SPCA is caring for 46 animals after their owner’s living arrangements changed, leaving them without a place to keep the animals.

The organization says the owner reached out for help, and the animals have since been transferred to BC SPCA locations in Kelowna, Kamloops, the South Okanagan/Similkameen and Surrey.

The group includes 22 cats and kittens, 16 Call ducks, six Muscovy ducks, one sheep and one goat.

The animals arrived in relatively good condition and are in quarantine while health testing is completed. They will be available for adoption once they receive medical clearance.

Farm animals require specialized care and can take longer to place in suitable homes than cats and dogs.

The BC SPCA says dogs and cats typically spend 10 to 14 days in its care before adoption, while farm animals stay an average of 29 days. Finding homes equipped to meet their specific needs can be a challenge.

The organization operates three barns dedicated to farm animal care in Kelowna, Nanaimo and Surrey. Animals living in large groups or arriving as farm animals are subject to additional biosecurity measures, including protective equipment, infectious disease testing and ongoing health monitoring.

The BC SPCA hopes to find permanent homes for the animals once they are cleared for adoption.

People interested in adopting can visit the BC SPCA adoption website to view available animals or set up alerts.
