The RDCO is asking residents on the west side of the lake to be alert to changes in landscape following the Quilpituk Creek wildfire this past summer.

It says landslides and flooding could happen after the loss of vegetation in the area.

Provincial officials have completed their initial post-wildfire assessment and the RDCO is asking residents to be alert to possible signs of danger, especially after heavy rainfall, such as sudden changes in stream flow or muddy, murky water.

Be informed. Be ready.

Get to know the land and waterways near your property. The best way to prepare is to watch for changes that could signal a landslide or damaging flood event. These may include:

  • Sudden changes in stream flow.
  • Rapid changes or surges in the amount of water (e.g. changes in volume) or water that quickly changes from clear to murky.
  • Abnormally dirty water.
  • Accumulation of large logs or debris.
  • A quick buildup of mud, sand, gravel or rocks in a flat part of a creek or in a ditch.
  • New cracks near the top of the slope.
  • Falling rocks or boulders or flowing or sliding soil. This may precede a much larger landslide.
