Sunnyside/Pritchard has joined West Kelowna Estates for being under a boil water order. As before, it is due to the presence of total coliform at the Okanagan Lake intake. Water coming out of the tap should be boiled for 1 minute before use. Take your own bottles to the touch-free bulk filling station at Shannon Lake and Asquith Roads for a safe source of drinking water.
Air Canada ranked last in on-time performance among the 10 largest airlines in North America last month at only 51%. WestJet placed seventh as 62 percent of its trips made it to the gate on time which is defined as within 15 minutes of scheduled arrival. The best airline for on-time performance was Alaska at 82%.
The annual Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak this weekend. With only a sliver of moon in the sky, conditions this year will be ideal for seeing lots of meteors. Saturday night into Sunday morning a few meteors will start to show up.. maybe one every 15 minutes, but a NASA meteor scientist says they’ll keep picking up the pace until before dawn on Sunday.
Kelowna RCMP are asking us to keep our eyes open for a 180-year-old violin that was stolen recently. It went missing during the early hours of August 3 in the lane behind the 700 Block of Wilson Ave following a performance by the owner. It has high sentimental and monetary value. RCMP in Alberta arrested two BC men after a report of a break and enter at a motel and an abduction. They responded to a report of a break-in where two men forced their way into a room in Grande Prairie with an axe. A man from Maple Ridge and another from Prince George were arrested and face several charges, including kidnapping
Satirical websites are getting caught up in Meta’s quest to remove all news from its Facebook and Instagram platforms in Canada. The editor-in-chief of The Beaverton, says the site’s satirical content began getting blocked from Canadian eyeballs this week. Most of the website’s traffic comes from Facebook, and it would be a disaster if access is not restored – one that could even result in the publication’s demise.
The search of the wildfire wreckage on Maui yesterday revealed a wasteland of burned out homes and obliterated communities as firefighters battled the stubborn blaze that has already claimed at least 53 lives, making it the deadliest in the U.S. in five years. Aerial video from Lahaina showed dozens of homes and businesses razed, including on Front Street, where tourists once gathered to shop and eat.
The Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear an appeal from three BC churches. They claimed their constitutional rights were violated when provincial restrictions banned indoor religious services at the height of the COVID pandemic. The high court decision upholds BC court rulings and, as with all SCOC decisions in appeal applications, reasons were not provided.
Demand for non-essential items at Canadian Tire stores took a dive last quarter as the company said customers are increasingly feeling the pinch of inflation and higher interest rates. In the three months ended July 1, net income fell 32 percent to $99 million from $145 million in the same period last year. The company’s president says discretionary softness is coming from more indebted households, most notably in BC and Ontario.

CFL in Edmonton last night, the Blue Bombers were down 22-0 at one point and stormed back to win 38-29. The last time the Elks won at home, they were still called the Eskimos and no one had heard of COVID-19. BC hosts Calgary tomorrow at 4.
The NFL preseason continues with 6 games today and tomorrow and 2 on Sunday.
The Blue Jays are back home and they start a weekend series with the Cubs today.
The FedEx Cup Playoffs are underway on the PGA Tour and going into the second round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Jordan Spieth has a 1 shot lead at 7 under.
