Evacuation alert lifted by City of Vernon

Some Vernon residents are no longer under an evacuation alert connected to the White Rock Lake wildfire.

The city lifted the alert for properties in Canadian Lakeview Estates, Adventure Bay and Tronson Road between 8125 and 9280 at 1:20 p.m. today, Sept. 1.

The alert was first issued on Aug. 6, and at one point, covered most of the city before being reduced to just those three areas on the east side of Okanagan Lake. The fire is burning in the Westside Road area, on the west side of the lake.

The city said the decision was based on fire, weather and site conditions, as well as ongoing suppression and mop up efforts being done by BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) and its partners along the east flank of the fire.

There are no other evacuation alerts or orders within Vernon’s municipal boundary.

“This has been a difficult and challenging summer in our region,” said Mayor Victor Cumming. “On behalf of the city, I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we waited for the right time to rescind the alert to ensure the safety of residents.”

This morning, BCWS reported that no new growth was observed on the White Rock Lake wildfire on Tuesday. The planned ignition that took place on August 30 in the Irish Creek Road area has reduced the risk of further spread on most of the fire perimeter and brought the fire down to established control lines in several key areas of the northeast flank. Drone scans continue to be used to identify hotspots so crews can seek them out on the ground for extinguishment.

Residents are reminded that weather and fire conditions can still change and emergency preparedness plans should remain in place. Ongoing updates about the White Rock Lake wildfire are available through the BCWS Wildfires of Note page.

“We know there is still a lot of work to be done in areas that remain under evacuation order and there has been great loss experienced within neighbouring communities,” said Cumming. “Our hearts go out to each of you and we offer sincere condolences.”

Cumming said they are thinking of everyone who has been evacuated from their home, as well as those who continue to work on the fire in the various roles.

“We also extend our deep gratitude to all volunteers and staff who have spent countless hours serving community members and neighbours through the various Emergency Operations Centres and ESS Reception Centres across the region,” the mayor remarked.
