Council votes to reduce construction noise on weekends

Kelowna council is moving forward with changes to address complaints about construction noise.

After reviewing the options and looking at what other communities do, council decided to allow the noise during a reduced window on weekends and banning it on statutory holidays except if a variance is granted.

The current bylaw allows the noise seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m, but that will change on weekends to between 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“A 9 a.m. start on Saturday and Sunday will provide flexibility in circumstances where
unavailability of materials or trades requires construction work to be shifted into the weekend,” a city staff report stated.

Staff also recommended that potentially unsafe heat conditions be added to the bylaw as a basis for granting a variance.
