As spring arrives, the BC Wildfire Service and Westbank First Nation are preparing for wildfire season with a planned prescribed burn northwest of Westbank.

The seven-hectare burn could begin as early as April 1, depending on weather and site conditions.

Officials say the controlled burn will restore forest health, remove excess forest fuels, prepare the area for replanting, and reduce the risk of future wildfires. Smoke from the burn may be visible across Westbank, West Kelowna, Peachland, Kelowna, and Penticton.

Residents with respiratory concerns are advised to limit outdoor activity, keep windows closed, and use portable air cleaners if available. The BC Wildfire Service emphasizes that prescribed burns are carefully planned and only carried out under conditions that ensure safety for both communities and fire crews.

More information is available on the BC Wildfire Service website.
