UPDATE: Highway 1 reopens after deadly crash
The Trans Canada Highway has reopened in the Shuswap after a five hour closure due to a crash.
The number-one route had been shut down since around 7 this morning near Tappen, west of Salmon Arm, after a fatal collision involving two vehicles.
Police say one person died at the scene, with no other details at this point.

Highway 1 closed due to fatal crash

The Trans Canada Highway is closed west of Salmon Arm after a fatal collision.
The BC Highway Patrol says RCMP and other emergency personnel responded to a crash two kilometres west of Tappen at around 7:00 a.m. this morning (Oct. 4).
“Early indications are that this was a two-vehicle collision, with the driver of one vehicle succumbing to injuries at the scene,” said Cpl. Mike Halskov, media relations officer. “BC Highway Patrol Revelstoke has conduct of the investigation with assistance from the collision analysis and reconstruction service and the BC Coroners’ Service. Investigators are working to determine the cause of this collision.”
Highway 1 is expected to remain closed in both directions for several hours as police gather evidence. Traffic Control personnel are on scene and re-routing traffic where possible.
Drive BC said at 9 a.m. Highway 1 was closed in both directions due to a vehicle incident at Ford Rd (2 km west of Tappen). The detour east bound is from Kamloops via Hwy 97 to Vernon then Hwy 97A to Sicamous. The west bound detour is via Hwy 97A at Sicamous to Hwy 97 NB to Monte Creek.
