DOWN THE LEES
Bio:
Emerging from Vancouver’s independent music scene and now based in the Okanagan Valley, Down The Lees creates emotionally charged alternative rock that moves between noise, slowcore, shoegaze and post-rock. Thunderous guitars, raucous bass and dynamic drums support founder Laura Lee Schultz’s haunting vocals and songwriting, confronting difficult subjects with equal parts intensity and vulnerability.
Originally conceived as Schultz’s solo project, Down The Lees evolved into a full band during her years living in Belgium, with Kwinten Gluehorse on bass and Jonathan Frederix on drums. In 2019, the band released “Bury The Sun,” recorded and mixed by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago. Down The Lees toured extensively in Europe, including performances in Belgium, France and the Netherlands.
After returning to Canada, Schultz rebuilt Down The Lees in British Columbia with bassist Chris Carlson and drummer Andy Ashley. The current lineup released the “DIRT “EP in 2024, produced by Jesse Gander at Rain City Recorders in Vancouver. Lead single “Douse” received Best Song at the 2024 Okanagan Screen Awards (OSIF), marking a new chapter for the band and the beginning of an ongoing creative relationship with Gander.
In 2026, Down The Lees released “This Is What It Feels Like”, a live album and concert film supported by Creative BC and the Province of British Columbia, capturing the power and dynamics of the current lineup. The band has continued to build its audience through touring and festival appearances, including Sled Island, Massif Music Festival, Girls to the Front and Loud Qathet Festival, where Down The Lees performed to a sold-out audiences, alongside shows throughout British Columbia.
