Weekend update: 1,618 new COVID-19 cases in B.C., 20 fatalities

New COVID-19 cases and deaths remain high in British Columbia.

The province reported 1,618 new cases over the weekend which is an average of 539 per day, along with 20 more people dying from the virus.

Interior Health had 254 new infections (average of 85 per day), while active cases were at 665, a drop of 113 from Friday.

The new cases provincially broke down as follows:

  • Saturday: 613 new cases
  • Sunday: 529 new cases
  • Monday: 476 new cases

B.C.’s active case count is at 4,966, a decrease of 140 since Friday. Of the active cases, 366 people are in hospital (up by 1) and 149 are in intensive care (up by 6).

Fraser Health continues to be the busiest of the five health regions with 699 new cases since Friday and 2,030 active cases.

Of the 20 fatalities, six are Interior Health residents, with four each in Northern and Fraser Health, and three each in Island and Vancouver Coastal Health.

As of today, 89.6 per cent of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have had one vaccine dose and and 84.4 per cent are fully vaccinated.

There have been five new health-care facility outbreaks at Chilliwack General Hospital, Valleyhaven Retirement Community, Harrison Pointe, Norman Manor (Fraser Health) and Amica Edgemont (Vancouver Coastal Health). The outbreak at Tofino General Hospital (Island Health) has been declared over, for a total of 29 active outbreaks.

Here is the latest on the outbreaks at facilities in Interior Health:

  • Cottonwoods Care Centre long-term care in Kelowna has 70 cases: 55 residents and 15 staff, with 15 deaths connected to the outbreak.
  • Overlander Long-Term Care in Kamloops has 28 cases: 21 residents and seven staff, with five deaths connected to the outbreak.
  • Village by the Station long-term care in Penticton has 41 cases: 27 residents and 14 staff, with three deaths connected to the outbreak.
  • Haven Hill Care Centre long-term care in Penticton has 12 cases: 10 residents and two staff, with one death connected to the outbreak.
  • Deni House long-term care in Williams Lake has 12 cases: 10 residents and two staff.
