Interior Health records 50 new COVID-19 cases, no new deaths Wednesday

The active COVID-19 case count for the Interior was 622 Wednesday, as 50 new cases were reported in the region.

The cases were part of 324 identified across B.C., and the provincial active COVID-19 case count for Wednesday was 3,380.

Data from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control shows that 56 per cent of the new cases identified over the past week were people who had not received a COVID-19 vaccine, while 39.2 per cent of new cases were fully-vaccinated individuals.

As of Wednesday there were 379 British Columbians in hospital due to COVID-19 complications, 109 of whom were in intensive care.

BCCDC data shows the unvaccinated population accounted for 64 per cent of hospitalizations over the past two weeks. The fully vaccinated made up 28.1 per cent of COVID patients.

The Ministry of Health also reported seven deaths Wednesday, none of which were located in the Interior. A total of 2,281 British Columbians have now died due to the virus.

B.C.’s first dose vaccination rate rose to 90.7 per cent Wednesday, and that 86.9 per cent of British Columbians aged 12 and over have received their second doses.

No new health-care facility outbreaks were declared Wednesday, though one in the Northern Health jurisdiction was declared over, bringing the active outbreak site list down to 22. The Interior continues to be home to four of those outbreaks.

  • Village by the Station in Penticton: 27 resident and 14 staff cases, three deaths;
  • Sun Pointe Village in Kelowna: seven resident and three staff cases;
  • Brocklehurst Care Centre in Kamloops: four resident and two staff cases;
  • Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops;
    • Unit 5S: 20 patient and eight staff/other cases, two deaths;
    • Unit 7N: four patient and one staff/other cases, one death;
    • Unit 6S: 11 patient cases;
    • Unit 5N: five patient and five staff/other cases.

Interior Health also considers Millar College of the Bible in Tappen as an outbreak site, as 33 cases are associated with the facility.
