COVID-19 cases climb in B.C. as 19 more deaths recorded
Active COVID-19 cases are on the rise in both the Interior and British Columbia as a whole, while more people have died due to the virus.
The province reported 1,799 new cases of the virus in B.C., 531 of which were located in the Interior.
The Interior, which had the second most new cases of the five health authorities in B.C. Friday, finished the week with 7,976 active cases of COVID-19. That marks an increase of 217 from Thursday.
The province had an active case count of 25,479 as of Friday, up by 75 from the day before.
The province also reported 19 new deaths, though none were located in the Interior. A total of 2,675 British Columbians have now died due to COVID-19.
Hospitalizations due to the virus fell by 39 to 946 Friday, with the number of COVID patients in intensive care fell by six to 139.
B.C.’s COVID-19 vaccination rate for people aged five and older was recorded at 90 per cent for first doses, with 84.2 per cent of that population having receive two doses.
The province notes that 92.8 per cent of British Columbians aged 12 and over and 93.2 per cent of adults have received their first vaccines. Additionally, 90.2 per cent of people age 12 and over and 90.6 per cent of adults have received their second doses, while the third jab rates were recorded at 48.1 per cent and 51.5 per cent, respectively.
The Ministry of Health noted that 20.1 per cent of new cases recorded between Jan. 27 and Feb.2 were unvaccinated while 75.1 per cent were double dosed.
Of the hospitalizations between Jan. 20 and Feb. 2, 26.3 per cent of patients had not received a dose of a COVID-19 vaccine while 68.8 per cent were fully vaccinated.
There were three new health-care facility outbreaks announced Friday, including one at Creekside Landing in Vernon. The Joseph Creek Care Village outbreak in the Interior was the only site declared over. There were 58 active health care facility outbreaks in B.C. Friday, 21 of which were located in the Interior.
