Top Stories – Apr 18 – K9 Strikes Again
Once again an RCMP police dog was instrumental in the arrest of a suspect in Kelowna. As police attempted a traffic stop, the guy ran off but was caught by officers. He was known to carry weapons and PSD Jango found a loaded 9mm handgun in the backyard of a home in the 1100 block of Sutherland. The suspect faces numerous weapons-related charges.
A one-day only pop-up recycling depot will be at the Peachland Recreation Centre parking lot on Saturday, May 7 from 10 until 2. Residents can drop off recyclables such as Styrofoam, glass and soft plastics that normally can only be taken to recycling depots. The pop-up depot is for residential recycling only, not commercial.
A reminder that starting tomorrow the Trans Canada Highway between Golden and Castle Junction will be closed for a month. It’s part of the ongoing construction through the Kicking Horse Canyon. Traffic will be routed via highways 93-S and 95 which will add as much as 1-1/2 hours of travel time.
Back to work tomorrow on a big roundabout project on the west side. It will be daytime construction at the intersection of Shannon Lake-Bartley-Stevens Roads until the end of May. There will be single-lane alternating traffic to install curbs, sidewalks and the central island of the roundabout.
Two men with stab wounds were taken to hospital early Friday following an altercation in Kelowna’s downtown core by the firehall on Water Street. RCMP spotted the fight and arrested a 33 year old man at the scene and called paramedics. Police don’t know what led to the clash.
The bodies of more than 900 civilians have been discovered in the region surrounding the Ukrainian capital following Russia’s withdrawal. However missile strikes continue and in Kyiv smoke rose on Saturday from the eastern part as the mayor reported a hit that killed one person and wounded several more.
Authorities have been investigating a suspicious fire in Kelowna. It happened Saturday night in a double-detached garage near Pandosy and Cadder. Fire crews knocked it down pretty quick but not before it caused damage to a wall, roof area and some contents inside.
The Fairfield by Marriott in Vernon and Salmon Arm have announced they are committed to the hiring of up to 10 Ukrainians who have been forced to leave their country. The hotels will also provide interim accommodations and support for the immediate needs of the refugees.
Research by University of Calgary engineering students could prove to be a positive development for Indigenous and remote communities in Canada’s north. They have figured out how to convert all-terrain vehicles to run on solar power instead of fossil fuel. The vehicle batteries run for over 90 minutes.

The West Kelowna Warriors host the Salmon Arm Silverbacks tonight at 7 in game 3 of the 2nd round of the BCHL playoffs. On the weekend in Salmon Arm, the Warriors took both games by scores of 6-2 and 4-1.
The Blue Jays are off today before beginning 3 games at Fenway Park tomorrow. On the weekend in Toronto, they had 2 wins and a loss against Oakland to bump their season record to 6 and 4.
Regular season is over for the Kelowna Rockets after 2 weekend wins and now it’s time to get ready for the WHL playoffs. The first two games are on the road Friday and Saturday in Seattle before they return home for games 3 and 4 next Tuesday and Wednesday.
At the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island, it couldn’t be decided in regulation as Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay ended at 13 under. Spieth won the playoff on the 1st hole.
The Vancouver Canucks will try to extend their 5 game winning streak tonight. The Dallas Stars are at Rogers arena at 7:30, then Ottawa visits tomorrow. Bo Horvat is out for at least 2 weeks with a lower body injury.
The Toronto Raptors are in Philadelphia for their 2nd playoff game against the 76ers today. In the first contest on Saturday, Philadelphia took a 131-111 win.
