The drivers of two transport trucks were taken to hospital, one via air ambulance helicopter, after a collision on the Trans Canada Highway west of Sicamous.

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) confirmed they received a report shortly before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (May 18) of an incident four kilometres west of Bernie Road on Highway 1 between two semi trucks. BCEHS says two primary care ground ambulances and one air ambulance responded.

DriveBC reported that the stretch of Highway 1 closed in both directions shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. It re-opened nearly two hours later at 10 p.m.

RCMP say the trucks collided head on.

“One driver was trapped and required the services of Eagle Valley Rescue to assist in his extrication. One of the drivers was air lifted by BCAS to hospital and the
other driver was transported to Shuswap Lakes General Hospital for treatment of his injuries,” said Staff Sgt. Scott West of Salmon Arm RCMP.

West added both trucks were heavily damaged and had to be towed from the scene. The highway was closed as the wreckage was removed, but has reopened.

RCMP continue to investigate the collision.
