A Campbell River man was shot to death by police after an alleged homicide and hostage taking. RCMP were called early yesterday morning after reports of a homicide at a local marina with hostages being held. While police were attempting to negotiate with the suspect, shots were fired and he was killed.
A new family-friendly annual summer event is set to debut in Kelowna this year. As it went to council yesterday, it was called ‘Kelowna Made’ and will take place on August 27th at City Park. It includes plans for performing arts, music and food including a pancake breakfast. The staff report says it will celebrate all that is Kelowna and continue to evolve each year.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has tested positive for COVID for a second time. He recently returned to Canada from Los Angeles, where he attended the Summit of the Americas. Trudeau also tested positive at the end of January after one of his kids tested positive.
No tasting stations along the route, but the Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon returns this Saturday. It will begin at The Vibrant Vine Winery and end outside the Delta Grand. Traffic control measures will be in place in Southeast Kelowna beginning at 6am going through the Mission and Pandosy neighbourhoods and should wrap up about 1. A federal minister says passport offices are still dealing with a surge of applications and wait times are far from acceptable. But Karina Gould could not say when things may return to normal but her department is considering further changes, including moving the application process online. In Vancouver, some were waiting in line nearly seven hours at the passport office.
Wall Street tumbled into what’s called a bear market yesterday after fears about a fragile economy and rising interest rates sent the S&P 500 more than 20% below its record set early this year. Bitcoin tumbled more than 14% from a day earlier and dropped below $23,400. It’s back to where it was in late 2020 and down from a peak of $68,990.
West Kelowna City crews are coordinating the delivery of sand and sandbags this week to waterfront locations. They will be monitoring and replenishing stockpiles as needed at: Fire Station No. 33, Casa Loma Beach, Falcon Park, and Sternwheeler Park. The city also issued a Water Quality Advisory for West Kelowna Estates. That’s in addition to the one for Sunnyside/Pritchard and the Boil Water Notice for the Rose Valley/Lakeview systems.
RCMP investigators are looking for suspects after a homicide near Oliver just before 4am on Sunday. They were called to the 1000 block of Pineridge Drive on the Osoyoos Indian Band land for a report that a man had been shot. Police say despite the life saving efforts of a friend, when officers and BC Ambulance arrived, they pronounced the 61-year-old man dead.
The Canada Airports Council wants the federal government to end vaccine mandates for passengers and aviation employees, so hundreds more workers could be back on the job amid a labour crunch. Ottawa continues to bar most unvaccinated foreigners from entry and requires unvaccinated Canadians to quarantine for 14 days when they return. The four largest airports are preparing for a 50 percent rise in traveller numbers within weeks.

The Toronto Blue Jays kicked off their home series against the Tigers with an 11-1 drubbing yesterday. It included a 7-run, 5th inning for the Jays. Game 2 of their 4 games is this afternoon just after 4.
Mikko Koskinen is leaving the Edmonton Oilers and heading back overseas. The goaltender signed with Lugano in Switzerland’s National League. Koskinen was a pending unrestricted free agent.
The BC Lions have signed American receiver Keon Hatcher to a contract extension through the 2023 season. He made four receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown in BC’s thrashing of the Edmonton Elks on Saturday.
Lamar Jackson rejoined the Baltimore Ravens yesterday to take his physical ahead of the team’s three-day mandatory minicamp. He missed the Ravens’ organized team activities this offseason for the first time in his career, drawing some criticism from around the NFL.
Free agent forward Andrei Kuzmenko is set to interview with both the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks this week as he seeks out his NHL landing spot. He is coming off a breakout season in the KHL, where he has spent 8 seasons, in which he posted a career-high 20 goals and 53 points in 45 games.
Major League Baseball has upheld Josh Donaldson’s one-game suspension. The Yankees’ third baseman was handed the penalty after making a remark about Jackie Robinson that Chicago manager Tony la Russa called racist. Donaldson also received a fine of 5-thousand dollars. He’s making 23 Million this season.
